What is a wet well and why does it need cleaning?

A wet well is the collection chamber below a pumping station. All incoming flows drop into the wet well, where pumps then lift them onwards into the sewer or rising main.
Without regular cleaning, waste builds up in the base and on internal surfaces of the chamber, including:

• Rags, wipes and sanitary products that won’t pump away
• Fat, oil and grease (FOG) that float and cling to surfaces
• Grit, gravel and other heavy solids
• General debris that wraps around pump impellers and level equipment
